The Background

Swimmers in the Taunton area can currently access three pools, managed by Taunton Deane Leisure and operated on behalf of the local authority:

Station Road, Taunton; a six lane 33.3 metre pool, dedicated to public casual use.
St James St, Taunton: a six lane 25yd pool with separate teaching pool dedicated to club, teaching and programmed use.
Sports Centre Pool, Corams Lane,Wellington: a six lane 25m pool for club and community use.

Taunton swimming Club and Deane Dolphin Swimming Clubs merged in 2000, to form Taunton Deane Swimming. The clubs handed over the responsibility for the Learn to Swim to the local authority and entered a joint funding arrangement for a Coach / Swimming Development Officer. The remit of this post was subsequently considered to be too broad for one individual and the decision was taken to review the post in relation to wider plans for the future development of Swimming in Taunton.

The Future

Under new proposals, a Trust could be established to run the facilities on behalf of Taunton Deane Borough Council.

One important outcome of new 3-way discussions concerning the future delivery and development of swimming has been the involvement of the Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership. Under the new memorandum of understanding, Somerset Activity and Sport Partnership:

Provide matched funding to secure the position of the full time coach
Provide office accommodation and administration support - alongside other multi skill community coaches and development officers
Provide Swimming Development Officer time to support the Coach
Taunton Deane currently support the position by:
Providing matched funding
Providing Sports development Officer time to work on swimming related projects
Appointing a Lessons Co-ordinator to be the interface between the club and lesson programme
Taunton Deane Swimming Club support the position by:
A firm commitment to achieve Swim 21 accreditation
Training and developing volunteer personnel
Supporting wider partnerships with neighbouring clubs.

NEWSFLASH:

GRAHAM DAVIDSON HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE NEW COACH

The wider Partnership group envisages that apart from developing a training programme to support the specific needs of the club, Graham will have an important role in leading all the clubs in the area forward. As well as, maximising the opportunities presented by exciting new Initiatives involving Specialist Sports Colleges, Long Term Athlete Development, programmes for Talented & Gifted swimmers and programmes improving links between PE and Sport in Schools and Clubs in the Community.

Jane Hushon and Colin Christmas work in partnership as Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership Swimming development Officers and are committed to supporting this coaching role;

“ Swimming in Somerset is organised and delivered by volunteer teachers and coaches and as a result the “Performance” standard of swimming has been difficult to deliver. We are sure that an enthusiastic and determined coach can work with us to establish a professional training scheme that will provide talented swimmers from Taunton and the surrounding area the opportunity to access the quantity and quality of training they require.”
