Check out the LINKS with your local ASA Swimming Club

So.... Are we GETTING IT RIGHT?
BOYS AND GIRLS - THE EARLY YEARS:
(Boys 6 - 9 - 12) (Girls 5 -8 - 11)
Focusing on the important processes of:
TEACHING - the FUNdamentals and
DEVELOPING - SwimSkills

Quality Programmes - such as the National Plan for Teaching Swimming will be structured, progressive, skill based, good fun, built on good educational theory and practice and delivered by qualified Teachers.
Can talented swimmers move easily from one programme to the other? Do swimmers come first?

Check out your local ASA Swimming Club
Are they ‘hot’ on Swimmer and Coach Development?
Are they ‘hot’ on good management and working with others to put their swimmers first?

RELAYS

THE KICK COUNTDOWN.
Using a front crawl leg kick, the winner will be the swimmer who kicks the farthest in ONE minute – holding float – arms extended in front.

SWIM PURSUITS.
These are 3 minute team swims.
4 swimmers in each team. Swimmers start at 5 sec intervals one after another and swim in ‘tandem’, Lead swimmer drops off each time at the end of each length, waits for other three to pass and then rejoins as the ‘tail-ender’. Whistle blown when there is one minute to go. Klaxon sounds time up – it is the position of the LAST swimmer, which determines the result.

MEDLEY ALL-STARS 50m
From a Freestyle Competitive start. Swimmers begin with Frontcrawl. The klaxon sounds when first swimmer reaches half way. All Swimmers must then change to backstroke.
At end of the length - turn as for Individual Medley , from Backstroke to Breaststroke. Swim Breaststroke until Klaxon sounds (when First Swimmer crosses half way) when all swimmers change to Freestyle. And swim to the finish

FLIP PAIRS: 2 x 25m Freestyle
From a competitive start, swim one length of the pool, flip 180* and ‘plant’ both feet to touch the wall. Second swimmer may only set off when both feet of incoming swimmer touch the wall. Second swimmer finishes with flip to touch the wall with BOTH feet.

13 additional events were included in the programme on Sunday. These events ran throughout the day as part of the competition and were for swimmers with special needs.
All swimmers, their team managers, local sports development staff and supporters made the day a special day and one which everyone will remember.
As was the case last year, almost 90% of those who were selected by their district to represent them, had never swum in a competition before.
You would hardly have guessed – and their efforts were applauded time and time again – with standing ovations from fellow competitors and supporters.

In the selection process, which started around the end of January, the developmental aims and aspirations of the organisers and co-ordinators were made clear **see below.
The response from Bath and North East Somerset sports development team was exemplary:
Working with schools, clubs and learn to swim programmes across the authority, swimmers were introduced to the events and were then invited to ‘trials’
Those selected were offered some four training and preparation sessions in the months ahead, led by coaches from ASA Swim 21 Accredited BATH DOLPHIN and other clubs.
No surprises then, when B&NES swimmers performed so well. A credit to their team managers, coaches, parents and ‘home programmes’

Music specially written for these events, running commentaries and the sheer enthusiasm of all concerned, for the effort and swimming skills on show made a long day well worth it !

IT CAN BE DONE !

The format for this event originated with a series of Development galas – The Friendly Series – which was piloted by the Somerset County Sports Partnership Swimming Development Co-ordinator, working with local clubs and coaches……. and has developed from there…
Swimmingfirst have produced Organisers packs and Guidance Notes for these events and soon be releasing the CD of original music and also commentary notes– on this website…

DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES ADDRESSED THROUGH THE PROGRAMME

It is vital that early contact is made with Local Clubs AND Local Swim Schemes and Schools, so that the programme of events and the following notes can be circulated and studied. It needs to be understood that for many swimmers, some kind of preparation for the event will be necessary.

In the process, it is hoped that partnership links between Schools, Clubs and Centre-based swimming schemes will be improved and strengthened.
Where the effort was made and these things were achieved last year, there was also very strong support and endorsement for the value of the process reported, from Coaches, Parents and swimmers.

  • The FORMAT provides clubs, schools and swim schemes with opportunities to review their policies and provision for the DEVELOPMENT and PREPARATION OF SWIMMERS within a number of contexts. These include : An Introduction to the rules and the competitive ethos of the Sport, ‘exit routes’, ‘Player pathways’ and Talent ID
  • It is SKILLS BASED with ample scope for emphasis upon DEVELOPING SKILLS and STROKE TECHNIQUE
  • It explores aspects of the current debate about what ‘counts’ as APPROPRIATE COMPETITIVE OPPORTUNITIES for athletes and swimmers at different developmental stages.
  • It builds upon the ENJOYABLE and FUNdamental Participation base from which swimmers start out - with elements that also link progressively to an environment in which the training of specific swimming skills can take place.

Guidance notes

  • Swimmers suitable for the event may be characterised as those who are at the stage of developing and beginning to Improve all Four Strokes.
  • They will typically be found in Pre- Squad, Early or Second ‘B/C‘string’ Competitive groups in clubs and will probably not have represented their club in competitions or had very few selections to represent.
  • Where there are quality, structured and progressive Learn to Swim Schemes - with good Swimmer: Coach ratios - eligible Swimmers may be found at the ‘top end’ of such programmes. They may have already participated in an Active Sports Festival or Local Development Camp.
  • Many of the events are derived from tried and tested skill development practices and so could be easily incorporated into club programmes or LTS Schemes prior to ‘trials’ or selection for the Youth Games.
  • It is hoped that by considering the requirements for the events, in good time, the ‘content’ and practices being used by coaches and teachers with these groups, can be adjusted or fine tuned to accommodate the needs of swimmers who might be eligible.
  • The Active Sport Local Development Camp and Festival, “extension of opportunity” programme may be linked to the preparation and selection of swimmers.
  • Events such as the ‘Pursuit’ are not only more fun when practised many times, prior to the event, but practice actually contributes significantly to improved performance times on the day. As well as also being a useful ‘tool’ to develop Endurance and Holding Technique-over-distance elements of a swimmer’s development programme.
  • 2003 Western Counties Youth Games Swimming Event links to Active Sport Stages 2 and 3, and to the ASA Swim 21 Teaching and Skills Development Club programmes. It also links to the ASA National Plan for Swimming.

It therefore ‘sits’ below Stage Four.. [Stage Four makes training and development provision for Swimmers who do not have an individual qualifying time for District ASA Age Group Competitions]

  • Those who are neither familiar with, nor implementing Active Sports Swimming or the National Teaching Plan should try to obtain information about the content of the Advanced Two and Pre-Competitive Modules.

Finally: special thanks to all our officials today for making this event possible
