The most likely reason why
many people either ‘swim’ inefficiently and ineffectively
OR NOT AT ALL is quite simply
this: … they have not had access to an informed teaching
programme. A teaching programme with guided and structured
activities, based upon a sound understanding of the fundamental
principles makes a real difference.
The difference between the confident and relaxed person in
the water and those for whom swimming never ever really becomes
a pleasure…
So what should be the Aims of the learn
to swim process ?
To
be enable people to move freely and confidently in the water
- and have fun!
The informed learn to swim process aims to establish a streamlined
body position as early as possible. By that we mean, face
in water - the rest of the body horizontal and near the surface.
From this position and this position only, can swimmers progress
to learn the strokes. It is impossible to learn effective
swimming strokes until a relaxed and streamlined body position
has been ‘mastered’.
What do we need to do ?
We need to follow a structured and progressive
programme of activities and exercises that systematically
strives to develop independence.
This IS the Learn to Swim process and it
comprises of successfully developing:
 |
BREATH CONTROL |
 |
 |
SUBMERSION |
 |
FLOATING |
 |
PROPULSION |
 |
ROTATION |
 |
PROPULSION, ROTATION and
CHANGING DIRECTION. |
We should address these points in sequence.
